An essayist reflects on the pleasures of fashion

Farrar, Straus Giroux; 336 pages; $27

Anne Hollander is unblinkingly beguiled by the ephemeral. In the preface to her new collection of essays and book reviews, "Feeding the Eye," she writes: "I am of my time, as (19th century artist)

By turns art lecturer and social historian, she conducts the reader through a gallery of 20th century pleasures fashion, film and photography never losing the leisurely pace of a personal tour guide. In sketches that recall the roving sensuality of 's prose, Hollander conditions the eye to hunger for a new way of seeing. Hollander does so.

In the rare instances when she adopts an elegaic tone writing about silent films or Japanese peasant dress, for example her effect is not to pine over what is forgotten but to wake our visual imagination to its potential. Reviewing a biography of fashion designer , Hollander notes: "Couturiers have an affinity with performers . . . except that the works of Mozart and Moliere stay and glow after their interpreters fade and die." In essays on St. Laurent and , Hollander proves herself a deft interpreter of fashion's most elusive performances.

Although Hollander acknowledges the "momentary signifi cance" of most visual arts as being their essential limitation, she is also aware of the moral consequences of how we dress, what we choose to photograph and how women are depicted in movies. But mostly how we dress. Hollander's sartorial ideal would appear to be "visual clarity and a sort of cool physical cleanliness," which she detects in the designs of Chanel or perhaps in a traditional kimono, where "the theater of dress was entirely a surface show and kept the body's secrets."

Now Playing

Student Comes Up With a "Clever" Way To Pay for Tuition FeesStoryfulDaredevil Demonstrates Impressive Bicycle SkillsStoryfulFrankie Muniz's Sexy DWTS Argentine TangoPeopleTimeWWE Signs First Female Wrestlers From India And The Middle EastVocativCarrie Fisher Once Sent a Cow's Tongue to a Producer After He Sexually Assaulted Her FriendPeopleTime'Where's Kylie?': Why Pregnant Kylie Jenner Was Absent from Mom Kris' On Set KUWTK Christmas Special PhotoPeopleTimeBaby Girl on the Way for Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Wife Amy See the Adorable AnnouncementPeopleTimeFamily Finds 'Miracle' Dog Waiting for Them Outside Home Destroyed by Wildfires: 'We Were Hoping Against Hope'PeopleTimeTaylor Swift Films New Music Video in LondonWochitGang's All Here! Cristiano Ronaldo's Pregnant Girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez Shares New Family PhotoPeopleTime

Simplicity, in short, goes a long way toward elegance, though Hollander never declares this openly. Instead, she celebrates cultural icons who were masters of their appearances and, like , reconciled self consciousness with art. Hollander praises 's "extremely expressive hands, which she used in movies as vessels of erotic feeling, especially autoerotic."

Surprisingly, we learn that Kafka, son of a dress accessories salesman, clung to well cut suits as his "private bid for aesthetic immortality." Hollander explains Kafka's preference: "The perfectly cut suit, so perfect that it is unnoticeable, can finally create a perfect nakedness for the imperfect, disharmonious body of the aspiring artist."

Hollander is also quick to appraise a lack of style. In a 1985 essay for the New Republic, she deplores what she sees as a "new erotic appeal in the perceived androgyny of childhood," the "everyday sexual ambiguity" of contemporary adult wear, "corduroy pants, flannel shirts, T shirts, zipped jackets, down jackets, colorful thick socks, shorts, sweaters, and sneakers all the formerly traditional costume of the playground and the schoolyard." Fourteen years later, imitation bulgari ring, the situation has not improved much.

While her discussions of child worship and androgyny rival longer social critiques, such as 's "A " (1996), Hollander's arguments can be inconclusive. Often she is content to accept a cultural phenomenon as a given (she's gaga over ), and she strikes a noncommittal stance toward the problems she poses. Writing of European colonists' attempts to ban body art, replica bvlgari rose gold ring, Hollander shrugs: "When one contemplates a Sumatran girl's teeth filed to sharp points or the pattern of scars on the breasts of a woman from the Cameroon, one can certainly understand the impulse."

To be fair, book reviewing is as ephemeral an art as any Hollander describes. If some of its contents lack the sustained regard of a book length essay, imitation bvlgari zero1 ring, "Feeding the Eye" remains full of tantalizing glimpses.

But Hollander's skills as an essayist find full flower, appropriately, in "The Culture of Flowers," a review of a book by that name. Here the reader can luxuriate in her descriptions of the advanced horticultural practices that flourished in antiquity and their implications for literary and religious symbolism.

diamanti con dimonds bracciale bulgari b zero.1 re

diamanti con dimonds bracciale bvlgari zero1 replica frequentemente. negozio online Mall Online Centro commerciale online sconto comodo tu acquisto

oro rosa oro bianco argento collana bvlgari zero c

diamanti con dimonds anello bulgari sanke knockoff spesso negozio online Mall Online Centro commerciale online Preferenze rilassato. tu acquistare

diamanti con dimonds collana bulgari zero1 copia spesso in linea Preferenze luce tutti acquisto selettivo acquisto su selezione

A new model princess

With a reported estimated personal fortune of 2.5 million (which she will gain access to at 21), one thing's for certain: her life will be free of the financial worries experienced by most of her contemporaries. However, despite her wealth and the fact that she's fifth in line to the throne, she cannot, it seems, simply become another 'It Girl'. Like most Royals now she will be expected to earn the privileges that would have once have been her birthright, but will hard work be enough to preserve the precious HRH that precedes her name?

Beatrice and her sister Eugenie are the only granddaughters of the Queen to hold the titles of Princess and Royal Highness. However, Prince Charles has made clear his wish for a slimmed down monarchy. Joe Little, a senior editor at Majesty magazine, says that taking away Beatrice's title "would be cruel", but in the future it seems that Royal hangers on are not to be tolerated.

Given her supposed status as the Queen's favourite granddaughter, it is unlikely Bea will be demoted to Lady Beatrice Windsor. Despite the Duchess of York's reported differences with the Queen, she has cannily encouraged the relationship between her ex mother in law and her elder daughter. Beatrice and the monarch now regularly spend time together riding at Windsor and raspberry picking on their annual holiday at Balmoral. She even found her sea legs this summer, joining the Queen on her birthday cruise around the Western Isles.

She is also particularly close to her father, Prince Andrew who, say Royal commentators, will have made a point of teaching her that with privilege comes responsibility. "Beatrice is very aware of her background," says Little. "Her father has always been particularly conscious of his Royal surroundings and he will have made sure that his daughters are aware of their duties as granddaughters to the monarch."

Right now Beatrice has more pressing concerns: she is a player on the international party scene and, from here on in, her appearance and ability to be seen with the right people will count as much as her title.

As would be expected from a girl of her standing, Beatrice has very well honed social skills and a concomitant glamorous circle of friends. Demi Moore, Kelly Osbourne and Peaches Geldof all reportedly partied until 3am at her birthday bash. And, although she has yet to establish a serious relationship, the number of eligible bachelors that surround her (Nikolai Bismarck, great great grandson of the former Chancellor) seem to outweigh the unsuitables.

It may only be a reflection of her tender years, but in contrast to her cousins William and Harry, she has not been caught having one too many drinks on the London party circuit and, for now, shows no sign of being a rebel. Although she did a pretty racy photo shoot for Tatler magazine last year, Royal commentators suggest this will not become the norm: she understands it is not the done thing for a Royal to indulge in too much self promotion.

Given the number of times she has been photographed this summer she doesn't need to, anyway. Bea (or "Bosser" as her mother sometimes calls her) has become a regular in the social pages of glossy magazines, displaying an emerging sense of style at events such as Elton John's White Tie and Tiara Ball and the Beckhams' Full length And Fabulous party in May.

"Apart from the occasional family photocall, we never really saw much of her as a child," says Little. "However, in the past few years we've become aware that she's growing up and is putting in appearances at key social events, such as the Cartier International Polo.

"In fact it would be fair to say that Beatrice now leads quite a jetset lifestyle. She goes to the United States with her mother quite regularly; she has been pictured on the beach in St Tropez recently; and has been sailing round the Western Isles in Scotland with the rest of the Royal Family for her grandmother's 80th birthday.

She may not be spending much time there but home is, for now, the family home Sunninghill Park in Windsor (where, despite having separated in 1992, the Duke and Duchess of York until recently occupied separate wings). Her existence is somewhat nomadic. Beatrice also has a room at the Duke's new home, Royal Lodge in Windsor, and she frequently accompanies her mother on her trips to America, where Sarah Ferguson rents an apartment in New York while fulfilling her role as a WeightWatchers spokesperson.

Despite these unconventional living arrangements, the Duke and Duchess have generally been applauded for providing the Princess with a stable family life and, as a result, Beatrice seems to be unscathed by her parents' divorce.

"Beatrice is a very grounded young lady with a great sense of humour," says Josh Salzmann, exercise guru to many a star, who has been the Duchess's personal trainer since the late 1980s. The fact that she is so well adjusted is, he says, a credit to the Duke and Duchess's parenting.

"They are a very modern family and, despite their [marital] difficulties, as parents they are a very solid unit."

Beatrice at least appears to be happy with the situation.

"I wouldn't trade my life for anyone else's. I know I'm very lucky," she said in a recent interview. "A lot of it is quite normal, scooting around the supermarket with a shopping trolley and things like that. With one parent being a prince and the other being an amazing sort of. business woman."

And, although she is now embracing all the opportunities that her title affords her, Little says that "it would be doing her a great disservice" to suggest that partying with her mates was all the young princess was interested in.

Despite her dyslexic status, Beatrice passed nine GCSEs last summer and is generally thought to be a bright, hard working girl. Her popularity at the 21,000 a year St George's School in Ascot has also seen her secure the role of head girl this year. But it is on the sports field that she truly excels.

She is an enthusiastic member of her school's lacrosse, tennis and swimming teams, and has also taken polo lessons from professional polo player Jack Kidd, brother of supermodel Jodie and make up artist Jemma.

It is expected that she will go on to study at university. If rumours are to be believed, plans for stint at a Swiss finishing school have now been shelved and it looks like she will be heading to Brown or another, similarly prestigious Ivy League institution in the States next year. Given her mother's position in the US as the nation's favourite Royal, it would make sense for her to base herself over there.

As a hard worker it is likely she will go on to carve out a career for herself and pay her own way, just like her mother. According to Salzmann, as well as being her 'best friend', Beatrice's mum is also her role model.

"Beatrice will make her own mark, but she does look to her mum, who has managed to pull off a hard balancing act between being a working woman and a Royal," he says.

"I've been on WeightWatchers Tours with the Duchess and she works 17 hours days, so she doesn't have a cushy life, but she is a very determined, focused woman.

"Both the girls have seen their mum in action and are inspired by her."

Beatrice also seems to take after the Duchess in her wish to become involved in charity work. Having already accompanied her mother on a number of trips, including one to visit babies with HIV in Russia when she was 14 years old, she is now forging her own special relationship with the Springboard for Children, a charity which helps disadvantaged, inner city children acquire literacy skills.

"She is very sympathetic to our work. while she had all the help she needed with her dyslexia, she knows other children are not so fortunate. She donated the considerable financial proceeds from her [Tatler] photo shoot last year to us," says a member of staff at Springboard's Head office in London. "I think she has ideas to become more involved in the future."

There's also a chance for her to inject some much needed glitz and glamour into the Royal Family.

"Although Harry and William are associated with youth, they are not glamorous," says Little. "Zara Phillips became a bit of a style icon a few years ago, and along with William's girlfriend Kate Middleton, Beatrice has the chance to help take the image of the Royal Family into the next century."

diamanti con dimonds bracciale bvlgari b.zero1 imitazione frequentemente. online sconto comodo. autorit

A New Way to Collect Art

It makes sense for art buyers to find out everything they possibly can before they buy a work and add to their collection. His ArtSolution company developed software applications and websites for the art world and Blundell worked closely with the organizers of major art fairs such as TEFAF Maastricht, the Paris Biennale and Masterpiece in London. He realized that collectors had a need for a quality mark for top art galleries. 'Many reputable auctioneers had good online information about their offerings, but the rest of the market was lagging behind. There was no international overview, particularly for art at the highest level. You had to search each and every gallery website in order to find a particular work or artist,' he explains. MasterArt set up a network of the best art dealers and created a single online database with details of thousands of objects.

A Label for Top Quality The three hundred selected MasterArt dealers come from twenty countries and are represented at important international art fairs, where their works are subjected to rigorous vetting. 'Whether you are looking for Rodin, Cartier or Charlotte Perriand, our database lets you search by keyword, category, artist or gallery.' Don Carlos Montero de Alba from Madrid collects antique weapons. 'MasterArt enables me to monitor my special field and locate the countries where the objects I'm looking for can be found. The selection is made for me, and I know who I'm doing business with,' he says.

If you are interested, you can also register free of charge for email alerts. You automatically receive notification based on the search terms you have specified when new objects come on to the market. The online virtual tours of art fairs let art lovers navigate to their favourite stands and see artworks again, or visit a fair they missed. The website has MasterArt Storybook, an art world blog by journalist David Moss, and a diary of exhibitions in galleries you will not want to miss.

There are two sides to the coin. The MasterArt site successfully attracts over 30,000 unique visitors a month. More than half visit a gallery, museum or art fair every month, and a quarter do so every week. Dealers establish new contacts through MasterArt, and sometimes this leads to sales. Blundell does not believe that the internet will take over the role of exhibitions and fairs. 'The internet is not competition for the art trade as we know it. It's simply a way to communicate. Our database lets you see where a work of art is, but after that it's business as usual. This is why we deliberately don't provide e commerce services.' He advises interested art buyers to go and see an artwork for themselves. 'Contact the dealer and make sure you get properly briefed. You have to be confident that this is the work you've chosen.'

Digital Library MasterArt participates in leading international art fairs TEFAF Maastricht, BRAFA in Brussels, Fine Art Asia Hong Kong, Masterpiece London, Cologne Fine Art and PAN Amsterdam. Visitors to the opening days of these and other fairs receive a copy of the MasterArt Directory of the World's Leading Art and Antique Dealers. It contains an overview of the most important art and antique dealers as well as a calendar of events.

Blundell and his team find out about the news and views of international collectors and gallery owners and managers at these fairs. 'That's how the idea for the MasterArt Catalogues iPad app came about. It's a digital library with over a hundred and fifty gallery publications that are normally reserved exclusively for art dealers' customers. This free app lets all art lovers leaf through the publications and zoom in on works of art from classical antiquity to today,' comments Blundell. They are also a valuable source for academics, not least because of the many research hours that went into them.

MasterArt Society MasterArt brings together people with a passion for art and organizes exclusive events in cooperation with its partners. 'People are looking for a little relaxation, inspiration and intellectual enrichment. We're reviving the eighteenth and nineteenth century tradition of literary salons with intimate dinners, digital presentations and debates about art,' explains Blundell. 'This gives collectors, art experts, academics, dealers and curators the opportunity to meet in an informal atmosphere, talk about art and share knowledge.' The first receptions were held in 2013 at stylish locations in Paris and St Petersburg. MasterArt dinners, presentations and debates are scheduled in Brussels, Washington, London, Madrid, New York, Cologne and Zurich in 2014.

Plans for the Future

The seventeen members of the MasterArt team are hard at work on expanding the existing dealer network. Their efforts are being supported by an advisory committee of twelve art experts, each a specialist in a different collecting field. 'By the time we've added new contacts in Latin America and Asia and the remaining western galleries, I expect we'll have some five hundred MasterArt members worldwide. And we're not making any concessions on quality, beauty and authenticity,' says Blundell. 'Currently we're working closely with international trade fair organizers and suppliers of luxury goods and services. We're developing a comprehensive package for art collectors a new way to collect art that's in step with the times,' he concludes.

oro rosa oro rosso bracciale bvlgari sanke replica

oro rosa oro rosso bracciale bulgari zero imitazione regolarmente. negozio online Mall Online Centro commerciale online Offerta convenienza facile. ye

oro rosa oro rosso bracciale bvlgari Serpenti fals

oro giallo anello bulgari b zero.1 copia giorno pe

oro giallo anello bvlgari B zero1 replica regolarm

life Jeeves is back in fashion

Once he would have worked only for the gentry, now "new money" pays his not inconsiderable salary.

Forget Upstairs, Downstairs these days it is upwardly mobile professionals who pay their "man" to organise their wardrobes.

The modern valet will have 50 or so clients on his books and will spend most of his time collecting clothes and shoes from their homes for cleaning and repair, visiting as often as the customer requires.

He will shop for presents, order new clothes, chauffeur children to school and families to their country cottages.

"There is a growing trend towards the use of valets by the nouveau riche, especially those who work in the City and Dinky couples double income no kids yet," says Vincent Burke of the London Chamber of Commerce. "The increase in valets is symptomatic of the kind of lives modern business people live: they work long hours and haven't got the time or the energy for basic chores."

Stephen Haughton, a 34 year old entrepreneur who set up his own valet business nine years ago, holds the keys to many of his clients' homes so that he can attend to their wardrobes even when they are not at home.

His clients include Cartier managing director Arnauld Bamberger and former Jamaican diplomat John Pringle. A typical customer will be a 40 something City worker.

Hudson's, a London company running a valet service, predominantly for City workers, has taken on around 20 new clients in the past few months.

"They are successful business people who have decided they don't want to polish their own shoes, rather than sons of Lords who don't know how to," said proprietor Andy Gillett.

"Our clients range from restaurateurs to advertising and marketing high fliers, more than half of whom are single," he added. And in a radical break with tradition, many clients are women.

Bertie Wooster received the cold shoulder treatment from his man Jeeves when he dared to wear a red cummerbund in public. While Jeeves "shied like a startled mustang" when he saw the get up, Wooster rationalised, albeit wrongly, that "you can't be a serf to your valet".

These days, says Mr Haughton, clients are happy to respect their valet's clothes sense when he shows an understanding of their requirements.

They also pay the kind of wages around pounds 20 an hour which were unheard of in the days of Upstairs, Downstairs. Mr Haughton insists this is a reasonable rate. He claims his valets provide a service far beyond the abilities of most modern domestic servants.

"Many of my clients do have butlers, but it is quite galling to think that these people are employed full time and can't even sponge a suit or do up a pair of shoes quickly," he says disparagingly.

"Whatever my clients want I will cater for and they will wear whatever I lay out. A client can go to his wardrobe any time and know everything will be there for him."

Mr Haughton's first client was life peer Lord Chadlington, chairman of International Public Relations. Lord Chadlington, who splits his working week between New York and London and spends his weekends in the country with his wife and four children, says he has found Mr Haughton's services invaluable.

"I had never used a valet before but the cost has been more than repaid by the fact that my suits and shirts have lasted much longer because he has looked after them so well."

Another client, the unmarried chief executive officer of a company involved in the selling and purchasing of corporate jets, said he swore by Mr Haughton. "The speed of turnaround and attention to detail meet my very fussy requirements, but he also has a personal touch which sets him apart," he said."The reason people make money is so that they can have a hassle free life and that's what Stephen provides."

Click the Adblock/Adblock Plus icon, which is to the right of your address bar.

On Adblock click "Don't run on pages on this domain".

If you are Private Browsing in Firefox, "Tracking Protection" may cause the adblock notice to show. Government settles with former Valcartier cadets in deadly 1974 grenade blast

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan formally apologized Thursday to the survivors of a deadly cadet camp explosion more than 42 years ago, as he announced the terms of a settlement between them and the federal government.

But Sajjan stopped short when asked whether the government will increase the levels of support and compensation for cadets who suffer long term injuries or illness in uniform today.

That is despite concerns raised by some survivors and the Canadian Forces ombudsman, who says little has changed in terms of helping ill and injured cadets since 1974.

"The programs that are in place for the leadership, for the training, and also to look after them, have evolved in many ways," Sajjan said in announcing the settlement.

"I'm very proud of the program and how we look after our cadets."

Sajjan was flanked by some of the former cadets and first responders who were at the camp in Valcartier, Que., on July 30, 1974, when a grenade exploded in a crowded barracks.

The accident, blamed on a live grenade being mixed with several dummies, killed six teens between the ages of 13 and 15 and left dozens more with lifelong physical and psychological injuries.

One of the survivors was Michel Juneau Katsuya, then 14, who later served with the RCMP and Canadian Security Intelligence Service before leading settlement negotiations with the government.

Juneau Katsuya told The Canadian Press each of the survivors dealt with the explosion differently, with some having successful careers while others suffered from PTSD or committed suicide.

"My coping mechanism until recently was to push it as far and as deep as possible," he said. "I was able to have a successful career in the RCMP and CSIS, but the box was there and was leaking constantly."

An official board of inquiry was held after the explosion, but it wasn't until military ombudsman Gary Walbourne issued a scathing report in 2015 that the government agreed to address the long term effects.

Walbourne, whose investigation was prompted by complaints from several survivors about the military's handling of the incident, found the boys had been treated unfairly.

In particular, he found they had received much lower levels of physical, mental and financial assistance than their instructors and other military personnel involved.

Thursday's settlement was the result of nearly two years of negotiations and included an apology from Sajjan for the length of time it took for the government to help those affected.

"To the more than 100 survivors of this incident, to their families and to the families of those of the deceased, on behalf of the government of Canada, I ask you to accept this apology," Sajjan said.

"We're truly sorry for the pain you have endured and we deeply regret how long it took to address it. Today we begin to correct the mistakes of the past."

The families of the six boys killed in the explosion will receive a one time payment of $100,000 while survivors or their families, if they have since died, will be eligible for a one time payment of $42,000.

Survivors can also apply for additional compensation worth up to $310,000 for pain and suffering while National Defence will also cover any related health care costs not already covered by their province.

National Defence estimates up to 155 former cadets and first responders or their families will be eligible, though exact numbers aren't known.

Walbourne wrote on Twitter that he was pleased there had "finally been a resolution" to the Valcartier tragedy.

"However, there remains a significant insurance gap for cadets," he wrote, before referencing a report he released in January that found little had changed for ill and injured cadets since 1974.

The maximum a cadet can receive for a lifelong injury or disability is $20,000, the report said, unless the cadet or their family fight for more compensation in court.

That compared to $100,000 for civilian volunteers and $250,000 for military personnel and reservists, plus workers' compensation and benefits from Veterans Affairs Canada.

While happy to finally have some closure, Juneau Katsuya said he and others will keep working to make sure all cadets are treated fairly and no one else has to go through what they did.

"Our work is not done yet," he said. "We're still going to be working and make sure we will become advocates for future cadets."

About 54,000 young people between the ages of 12 and 18 are enrolled in the land, sea and air cadets.
